Homeland Creamery

Homeland Creamery in Julian, NC is a six generation family owned and operated farm. Brothers Chris and David Bowman, along with their wives, Terry and Jayne, currently run this traditional operation focusing on happy cows and excellent dairy products. Their herd contains Holstein and Jersey cows who either graze freely in beautiful pastures or relax in the cool shade of trees. This idyllic life makes milking easy. The milking process usually starts around midnight and by the wee hours of the morning pasteurizing – the old fashioned way – begins. The end result is a richer, creamier milk which gets bottled and hand delivered as soon as it’s ready. Could it get much fresher? Probably not, and you can taste the difference! http://www.homelandcreamery.com

Bracken Brae Farm

Bracken Brae Farm is a small family-owned farm in Mebane, North Carolina. Linda Sakiewicz and her husband Claude Hughes have had their farm for many years and raise chickens for their eggs and grow herbs and vegetables without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Their chickens are raised on pasture where they eat bugs, grubs, worms and seeds, all of which help them produce eggs with bright yellow yolks. Livestock guardian dogs protect the flock and help to keep predators out of the pastures and gardens. Their chickens receive no antibiotics and no hormones and are free to wander the property, make dust holes and bask in the sun. For several years Linda has been supplying Weaver Street Market in Carrboro and Southern Village with her fresh herbs and recently has been supplying the newly opened Hillsborough Store. She also supplies Crook’s Corner and Lantern with her herbs, vegetables and fresh blueberries. In 2006 Linda began supplying Locopops with fresh herb such as Lemon Verbena, Perilla, Lemon Penang Basil, Genovese Basil, Rosemary, Tarragon and Sage. She’s willing to try growing new varieties of herbs and looks forward to expanding her offerings to Locopops. Suggestions? http://brackenbraefarm.info/default.php

SEEDS

SEEDS is a non-profit community garden whose goal is to teach people how to care for the earth, themselves and each other through a variety of garden-based programs. One of their primary programs, DIG (Durham Inner-city Gardeners), empowers teens by teaching them organic gardening, sound business practices, healthy food choices and food security values. The program emphasizes sustainable living and growing practices, ecological balance, and the natural recycling of organic materials for plant health and nourishment. DIG youth are paid a stipend to cultivate fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and mushrooms, which they sell at the Durham Farmer’s Market. Locopops has been purchasing fresh herbs and other produce from DIG since 2005. http://www.seedsnc.org/
